I am going to try and become a CG convert

I have flirted with CG for a long time, but stayed mainly on CB because I was familiar with it, liked most of the people there, etc.

Today Mister P's complaining about posting "crap" from CG on his beloved CB really pissed me off. I think I am almost ready leave the old HFN behind and come forth as a new faithful user of CG.

Due to being banned from religion posts, I posted my farewell on CB, that was somewhat ambiguous. To be honest, with each passing day, I have less attraction to going back, not more.

I don't know how BYU71 did it. He stayed away from CB for a long time, then jumped right back in.

it's sort of like the difference between living in the dorms and living in your own house.

That is actually a great comparison.

The dorms are loaded with people, some interesting, some forgettable, some annoying. But there is always something going on.

A house is populated by people you generally like and enjoy, but there are only about 5 to 7 people home at any given time.

I wish there were more people over here.

what's the ideal size?

Back not too long ago, the only time more than 100 donors were online on CB was on a gameday.

Now it is above 200. And that of course doesn't count the non-donors.

I think the size of CG now may be close to year 2000 CB.

One problem (or maybe it is a good thing) is that it is hard to find us. If you do a search on BYU message boards, we don't come up. Part of that is my fault, but what it means is that there aren't many sites that link to us.

Good question. I would say that it isnt the amount of registered users, but the amount of regular posters that makes the site fun and interesting.

Right now that the target audience for CG is, for much part, the same as for CB (as evidenced by guys like Tex or Indy....they seem to do well here and they have no issue expressing their conservatism).

I think the biggest hurdle for CG is the terrible PR is gets on CB. not a lack of google hits. Who joins CB because of Google? People join over there mostly the same way they join here...word of mouth/referrals. People over there seem to have an image of this place that is actually false....at least, from what I have observed. For example:

1. CG is strictly for apostates. While there is certainly a noticeable degree of negativity towards the Church, leaders, or some points of doctrine, this place is nowhere near a den for anti-mormonism. If I had to describe it, it is more a place where some gather to share little known facts or practices about the Church that seem to go against the mainstream perception of Church practices. This isnt necesarily anti-mormonism. I view CG as the Seinfeld episode where George wants the girl to think he is a rebel and he is tough, but in reality, he isnt. He's just another manic, self absorbed guy, like everyone else.
2. CG hates CB and Vice Versa. I have already stated that it is obvious that there is a serious "lover spurned" syndrome here against CB, and in particular against El Jefe. To be fair, Mister P's comments this morning shows how stupid that attitude is on both sides. Just admit that you love CB and miss it and are pissed that you are not dating it any more. Or prove you've moved on by dating another girl and stop driving by your old girlfriend's house every single night.
3. CG is for people who think they are smarter than CB. If this place is noticeably smarter, I havent seen it. It seems like most other chat boards I have been to. Seriously, what goes on here that is markedly more intelligent than goes on elsewhere? Requiem, a long time poster here, just posted a serious inquiry but had to qualify it by asking people to not respond with the implied "usual" personal attacks and sexual innuendo. People pack hunt Lingo with vaseline references. I think those who complain vocally about CG on the other board likely have spent little time here. if they did, they would not feel overly intimidated.

If more people on CB would get that CG is actually a good place to come and have some fun and talk in a slightly less restrictive fashion, with bigger avatars, and you tube capabilities, then I think the traffic count would increase. Maybe if there were about 40-60 active posters here online most of the time, that would be perfect. But that is just a swag on my part. I have no idea what the right size would be.

You missed the biggest one.

CB is a club. CG is a cult.

LOL, classic analogies, especially the Seinfeld reference. Well done, Triplet.

I have never heard that one. I have heard the other ones, though.

I wouldnt doubt that some thing of CG in that way, though. Truthfully, Mister P's response this morning to HFNW was kind of shocking. Talk about a complex.

MikeWaters 10-26-2007 07:05 PM

Also,

CB is a mob.

CG is a platoon.

Indy Coug 10-26-2007 07:08 PM

CB is the Three Stooges
CG is Dick Dastardly featuring Jeff Lebowski as Muttley
