Key stat for Thursday

Sacks Allowed.

If Utah allows two sacks or less: they win by 10.

Three sacks: Utah wins by 7

Four sacks: win by 3

Five sacks: OT win or loss

More than five sacks: loss

Utah Sacks Allowed by game (solo)

UM: 4
UNLV: 1
UtahSt: 0
AFA: 5
Weber: 2
OSU: 3
Wmg: 3
CSU: 1
NM: 1

Bonus stat: Punt Returns...

Utah is almost last in the country in Punt Returns. They suck almost as bad as BYU. They'll have to do better. If special teams can give BJ a short field just a couple of times on Thursday, Utah will win by a TD.

I know its a different animal but it amazes me that BYU is 14th in Kickoff return yardage but 116th in punt return yardage.

If you're right and sacks allowed is what it comes down to, then you guys have your work cut out for you. TCU leads the nation in sacks. Bradford got half his sacks so far -- three -- against TCU. BYU has only allowed 9 sacks all season, and I think five of them came against TCU.

Though some of it has to do with opportunities...

# Kick Off Returns

BYU 31
Utah 24

# Punt Returns

Utah 26
BYU 18

This makes Utah look even worse in the cat in some ways...

On one hand, yes, they have a great D. There are only eight teams in the country with more Punt Returns than Utah, but they all have 2x to 3x as many yrds as Utah on those returns.

Yeah, if I look at my post again, it's probably more like the following:

If Utah allows two sacks or less: they win by 10.

Three sacks: Utah wins by 7

Four sacks: win by 3 or OT

Five sacks: OT or loss

Where did you come up with these numbers? Why if only 3 sacks Utah wins by 7? I see 3 sacks by Jerry Hughes alone. He is going to be going against Dustin Hensel all night. Hughes had 4 vs BYU and Hensel is worse than BYU's right tackle Oswald.

Hughes is a beast and if theidea is to be able to just slow him down a bit, the Utes might consider keeping Mack or Asiata in the backfield to at least make him have to come through one of them as well as Hensel.

This is the kind of game in which the Utes really need another Jordan Gross.
