the Paris attacks

Boots on the ground in Syria or Iraq or Libya should be the absolute LAST option. No more wars that can't be won. No more nation building. Contain with a wall of air defense and support the best guys than can win that will deal with us and pledge to us. That's it.

The sad fact is that no matter how much we would like to transform the region into a semblance of ourselves, we cannot.

That region is ungovernable except by totalitarian regimes. It takes a very strong hand to govern, a region rife with violent, uncivil ideology.

The Arab spring has been an unmitigated disaster.

I remember hearing a professor of political science and anthropology who opined that freedom is a luxury of the provided for and educated. In the Middle East, outside of Israel, you have large portions of the population who are badly educated but yet ideologically indoctrinated with hate, poor people, so they are the types of peoples who will engage in mob tyrannies.

Short answer is until people are more liberally educated, democracy is a bad idea.
