Tell us if it's any good. If so, I'm gonna buy it (it is BOM year in Gospel Doctrine). From the blog though, it sounds like he's smoking crack.

He or she is speaking around the subject. Typology involves speaking about symbols and metaphors and if we are to read it typologically, it almost sounds as if we are saying its historicity or lack thereof doesn't matter.

Learn from the symbols and lessons it teaches is what it sounds the author of the article is trying to say. Repent, follow the commandments and seek inspiration. We can do that with any work. How to wrestle with any existent or non-existent historicity in terms of the symbols?

Most of us can't really wrestle with the historical context of the BoM because there is no known historical context, other than recent efforts to find MesoAmerica in the BoM as Brant Gardner argues. But this is not something that the average Mormon attempts to do.

Seems to me that the BoM has almost been exclusively studied for what it says and what it symbolizes.

The only reason I posted it is because some are saying that Adam Miller is one of the most important current thinkers and commentators of the Book of Mormon (a theological up and coming superstar, if you will), and he is endorsing this book.

Mind you, I haven't read anything by Miller.

Well, it is read for two reasons. First, to understand an unverifiable society that existed allegedly in a pre-Columbian context worshiped God and Christ in a 19th Century manner. Second, to use this platform as authority for the LDS Church.

I don't believe LDS read it in a form of typology as suggested by the Common Consent guy.

I hadn't heard of him either. And if that commentary by Miller is any indication, he doesn't appear to have a legitimate threat to being a superstar.

Miller starred in a Mormon stories podcast wherein Dehlin asked him what he thought about masturbation.

I assume that is one of the first questions Dehlin asks all his guests. And personal confidants.
