Then and Now: your fastest mile

For me:

Teens: 5:30

Now: 6:40

Coach McGuirk 07-18-2008 08:28 PM

teens : 5:51
Now: in the 8's although I have not tried to run a mile at tops in a while.

teens: ?
Now: 6:05

Age 22:6:05

Last year: 5:36

How cool would it be to run under 5:00? That would be awesome, but the suffering that would be required just doesn't seem worth it.

Not a fair question.

Teens, meaning up to 19: 4:55 (faster in college, 4:38)

Now, 5:25. (usually breaking six is hard though 5:45 to 5:50 consistently). So almost three decades later, or thereabouts, almost a minute per mile slower.

It's just tempo and interval training.

I would have to eliminate other stuff, but with a rotation of 200s, 400s, 800, 1200s, and 1600s, I could get you down there.

It's just holding the first 400 near 72, not letting off on the second, pushing hard on the third without letting legs lose cadence and then smashing the last one.

I could easily train you to reach it. I bet if you let me train you I could get you near 4:30.

Leg turn over is the key. If you run with power rather than cadence it's tougher.

6:12 at 11yo.

17:00 now (estimate)

How the hell did you max out at age 11? Either you are much faster, (what I believe), or you suffered a terrible injury.

A 6:12 is blazing fast for a fifth grader. Geeze. I could only do about a 7:20 at that age.

1. I never ran the mile after the 6th grade.
2. I was in excellent shape back then (I did summer track)

I believe I was 11 during 6th grade.
