For the non-believers who served missions
An honest question.
Why did you serve a mission? Was it because you felt pressured? Was it because it was expected of you? Did you at the time have a testimony? Again, not slamming just curious about your perspective and thoughts on that. |
I believed
I believed when I went. I believed for a number of years after. I stopped when the promises of personal revelation and the gift of the Holy Ghost rang hollow.

I'm a devout believer who has differences of opinions with certain LDS dogma.
I went on a mission, loved my experience, glad I went. My testimony fortified because of the content of the religious discussion here. The reason I answered, I am sure Mesa thinks I'm a non-believer. |

It is the only reason I believe and hang on during difficult times. Without it, I would have abandoned years ago. Aside from those insights, I could explain away most of what I have done. However, those insights and actions I cannot explain away as I could my very existence. However, your response sounds intriguing as does your name. |
good question.. i wonder also.. and definitely not to slam..

I was a good son, so I proceeded presuming what my parents taught me was right, despite inner torment, some unrecognized at the time. I could not have made it through the two years and contributed to the cause had I not reached a point of convincing myself it must be true. In fact, I was in many ways an insufferable mullah. But I can't say my mission was one of the happiest and most fulfilling times of my life. I endured and I made the most of it.
