Many reasons to be concerned. An entirely new, inexperienced staff with players being asked to use new systems and an inadequate offensive line with new receivers. Not a great recipe. Fortunately, Arizona is not perfect either. Utah the following week is a concern. |
I'm in gear with FS1.

Unimpressive performance by the offensive team.
Hill looks slower. Ty's game calling is conservative and so far unimaginative, and the players aren't make plays. It shouldn't surprise with so many rookies on the coaching staff, but all were convinced that Ty would step in and be magical. |
Our receivers are ordinary again.

Jamaal is the best offensive player. This type of vanilla offense is something Whit knows how to defend. First, their defensive line is larger and more capable. Second, their safeties and defensive backs are good and will play in the face of the receivers.

we are also seeing the limitations of Taysom. Nothing deep. No timing routes to receivers running outs. Mostly sort throws. And him running.
We actually need to run him more. It's the only thing he's good at. And if he gets hurt....oh well...we'll just sub in the better thrower. |
I was pleasantly surprised to see the shotgun used to such a degree. Glad to see Ty is not an ideologue. Empirics say you average 6.0 yds out of shotgun and 5.0 yards from under center. Get sacked less.
The only bad play call was punting around midfield on 4th and 1. One of the good things Bronco did was go for it on 4th and short around midfield. That's what the empirics suggest. Going for it on 4th and 1 inside the 10 was the right call, given our crappy kicking game. Also, had we failed, we leave Zona's offense at a much inferior position. |
it still remains to be seen if Hill can make progressions. I was not impressed in that regard. 5th year senior should be able to do this.

We also can't really tell if he's actually slower.
