I was watching Music and the Spoken Word on Sunday...
 

The narrator told a story about Abraham Clark, a patriot who signed the Declaration of Independence. In his story, he mentioned that two of Clark's sons had been captured by the British, and Clark was told that if he would not sign the Declaration, his son's would be freed. If he did sign, they would be executed. He signed the document anyways.

A powerful story, but it doesn't appear to be true.

Clark was indeed a patriot. His sons were captured, but apparently not until after he signed the document. The British did not actually communicate with Clark about his sons. He signed, just like the others, knowing that his signature meant his family and property could be attacked. Still a very brave act, but I was a bit disappointed after hearing the story which sounded really great.

Clark did, however, never mention his sons in Congress or use his authority to obtain their release. He thought that would be unfair to other Americans not in Congress (very noble). He did speak out once when his son was put in a dungeon without food or water. He informed Congress and they ordered retaliation against a British officer. The condition of Clark's son was promptly improved.

I am sure they didn't make up the story, but I can't find a source supporting the story read. Any ideas? I got my information from abrahamclark.com and wikipedia.

I would love for the story to be true, as it would instantly be one of my favorites.
