joseph smith as the holy ghost?

so last night im talking with this family, the guy says to me he thinks the reason we dont know the name of the holy ghost is because its not actually a person, but more of a calling.....

and that joseph smith might have fulfilled this calling at one point in time....his wife shut him down pretty quick, i had to leave for a date so i didnt get to discuss this any futher...

anyone hear anything resembling this line of thought?

MikeWaters 08-18-2005 05:17 PM

was he wearing a tinfoil hat?

fusnik11 08-18-2005 05:40 PM

ha ha...

no he was one of my dads counselors for years, very smart dude just had never heard it before so i didnt know if he was flying off the handle or there was something said that would make him believe that way....

Archaea 08-18-2005 05:52 PM

I've heard that

the Holy Ghost is a calling, an unbodied spirit, who possesses certain powers by virtue of disembodiment.

I've never heard of JS potentially serving in that capacity. The HG has always been one of the mysteries for me.

fusnik11 08-18-2005 05:54 PM

hmmm....

i wonder where this idea originated from.....

Dan 08-18-2005 06:46 PM

I do not know where it originated ...

... but that idea has been passed around here and there based on some comments Joseph was alleged to have made. I thought I have kept files of the Joseph/HG issue, but to my suprise, I do not have any. Another idea that resurface from time to time are that Heavenly mother is the HG.

If I find a Joseph/HG article I will pass it along.

thanks dan, appreciate it....

how extensive was the administering of angels joseph received?

was he consistently being visited by seth, michael, elijah, others?

to the point where he knew physical traits of these people?

My father-in-law claims that he once held that calling

He said it was revealed to him that he once held the "calling". I can't help to think the guy is a nut. fusnik11, aren't you up in the Ogden area? Are you sure you weren't talking to Bryce Gibby?

fusnik11 08-19-2005 02:36 PM

Wow, I'll bet Thanksgiving at the in-laws is an interesting experience.

I don't want to open too big a can of worms, but when BY taught AG, did he expound on any beliefs about Heavenly Mother/Eve?

ute4ever 08-20-2005 04:05 AM

I have a list

Concerning the question about how frequently was Joseph Smith receiving angelic visits, I had an Institute of Religion professor who compiled a list of the personages who visited Joseph, and the references. It was about 40 people long....from Eve to Moroni.

I can dig it up if you want.

fusnik11 08-22-2005 03:31 PM
