Ramen Renaissance

Interesting article on ramen in America. Nothing better than a good miso ramen, the Sapporo variety being the very best. There are whole television shows in Japan dedicated to finding the best ramen shops, as well as several glossy books on the subject. Kind of like the guides to the best restaurants in Paris. Hmmmmm.

Then they end the article with a screwy recipe for something called ramen salad. Stupid Americans.

I'm surprised that they didn't have a recipe for this popular staple on my mission:

1. Cook ramen. Dump water.
2. Add can of cream of mushroom. Heat. Mix.
3. Place on top of toast.
4. Eat.

I had it once. It was better than you would expect. But I never cooked it again.

I just read that and had the same thought when I saw the article. Yuck.

In my recent trip to Hawaii with my son we visited lots of ramen shops in Honolulu. I swear some of those bowls were gallon sized.

One of our local Asian markets sells raw ramen noodles. Great stuff.

I think I would prefer to try waterboarding.

Cream of Mushroom/Chicken/Celery soup is an enemy of Jeff Lebowski.

Hilarious! You should use cream soup cans for target practice instead of pop bottles.

Oh to find a good ramen shop. We found a good one in Paris of all places, right next to the Paris Mitsukoshi department store (staffed by Japanese speakers to cater to Japanese tourists). The shop also had good gyoza. Aside from the size, how was the taste in Hawaii?

The size thing kills me and my wife. We took the kids to a local "Japanese" restaurant called Osaka (but the kanji read Osaka-shi) and ordered oyakodon (spelled "oyakidon" on the menu) and they brought out individual bowls big enough to feed four people each.

Memphis is not a big gathering place for Japanese people.

Honolulu has its faults, but it is fabulous for Asian cuisine. I love all of the little curry, ramen, vietnamese, korean, thai, etc. shops on every corner.

This reminds me of the time when Babs posted her recipe for Spam pie, and her son read the thread on his Blackberry while out camping, and replied with "thank God I'm not home."

I'm sorry to hear about your problems with size. It really matters to some women.
