Throwing a game = you go into a game knowing you will purposefully do things so that your team will lose, you consciously decide: I am not going to make this block, I am going to go off-sides on third and short, I am going to clip a dude on the opposite side of the field on a large gain, etc.

There is a huge difference in intent. Players give up on coaches, programs, themselves, all the time, but they aren't out there throwing games with the intent that the coach will lose his job.

I don't think we disagree here. My point in saying the thought that differentiates the two is the concious decision based on intent as you spoke of. I was just trying to illustrate that in my mind while the difference between the two presents a huge gap, getting from one to the other is not.
