I agree with you in that it should have been handled this way. I'm just of the belief that they were not as innocent as they would have everyone believe.
It may have well-planned but thwarting the plans by ignoring it would have been more humorous.

They may be telling the details which are important to them. The fact is, the Church could have handled it better and more deftly.
