what do Jews believe?

I've never met a Jewish person I would consider as religious. Either that or they are very private about their beliefs.

As I'm watching the news about Gaza, I wonder what religious Jews actually believe. Any ideas?

Orthodox believe in a division of the sexes in worship, wearing the yamulka, and in a kosher eating. The believe in one God, whose name they will not speak outside the synagogue.

The closest I have come to understanding orthodox jews, is that I read "My name is Asher Lev" by Chaim Potok.

Jews usually believe in monotheism, but there is no central authority so the beliefs are somewhat managed by conclaves of rabbis.

Debate and discussion of ideas develop a new meaning among rabbis.

There is a joke which can represent what I mean.

One person asks a Jew, "Why do Jews answer questions with a question?"

To which his Jewish compatriot responds, "Why, what's wrong with that?"
